Another path?

Post by Ridea200 »

Where do I start? Bit of a loaded question, but the gears are turning...What I would like to build is what you would get if a dirtbike and a sportbike had a baby. The pic below is a bit what Im talking about. (Also, think Ducati hypermotard) I have the rest of the kdx frame, and an 80 kz1000 frame (ex cop bike). Also, an 05 zx10 engine, and suspension. What do you guys think?

What you are describing is the very active Adventure Bike arena. Lots of good builds over at Adventure Rider. One of the best is the CRF500 which is a Honda PTwin wedged into a CRF frame (link here). There's also a guy who takes Kawasaki Ninja 650 motors and shoehorns them into a Versys frame (link here). I think you will find that a ZX10 is going to be a heavy engine for true offroad work, but would be a killer fire road candidate. This is not the forum for that though, as this is specifically for KDX hybrids using the KDX motor and better frame/suspension, the Other Bikes forum is probably a better choice.

Hmm, the Versys already has the Nija 650 engine in it only tuned differently.

I completely agree. Moved to Other Bikes sub-forum.

I hear you about the engine being heavy for real offroad use. Ill jump on the 200 for that. There's plenty of fire roads around where I live in eastern wa. It's 6 miles of dirt to pavement from my house...I cant swing a "new" bike, but I have parts...lol
If this ever gets of the ground, I'll be sure to post lots of pics. So far I've just walked back and forth with a tape measure...And thanks for moving this to the right forum.

Haven't really done anything with this yet. It's been pretty cold.
Bufftester: what part are you in? I grew up in lake stevens.
Mattawa hmm. That's where the desert 100 used to be.
I'm pretty sure there's a few of us in wa. We sould try to set up a ride some time, after winter.

Im in the South Sound (Tacoma area). I rode in the old Mattawa 100 back in the 70s with my dad and brother. Still some fun riding there up in the BLM land. Summer time its all Taneum/Manastash/Mad River. Lots of great riding all over the state.

Well, I think I'm going to use the kz frame for ease of engine fitment. I know the hillclimb guys have stuffed streetbike engines in dirtbikes, but it looks like a pain.
This was an old cop bike, so it had bags and such, that I pulled off yesterday to get a better look at things. Looks a lot smaller without all that stuff on it. No pics of this bit yet, but the back of the frame is about the same width as the kdx, so I may be able to adapt the mx fender (and seat, side panels) off the kdx for some dirtbikeish flare. I don't think the engine swap side of things will be to bad, but it needs to look right as well.
