TTR 50E hard to start

It s been awhile, glad to see the site alive and well! :partyman:
I got this ttr50e that is a pain in my butt, got a new carb on it and someday it fires up right away and someday you ll end up draining the battery. Choke or no choke, air filter is clean. Pull the plug last time and it was dry.
When it does fire up the idle is right on. I noticed it takes a few min on choke to get it to stabilize. If you rush it it dies and you re done for.
Thoughts?
Thx

Welcome back.

Define "new carb". :-)

I was trying to adjust the air/fuel screw and the pos stripped. Impossible to get it out. I had to get a new one from amazon.
Note: i was trying to adjust the fuel/air screw for the exact same reason. Sometime it would start easy sometimes not. More i think of it the more it sounds like i need to go up on the pilot jet. Never thought a little 50 would be so finicky...
Once it warms up, it idles fine tought.
Thoughts?

Genuine carb or questionable carb or straight up counterfeit?

I have a 2008 TT-R125L. I put a one size larger pilot in it to help starting.

100 % not yamy carb...looked exactly like the one i replaced though. It fired right up when i installed it. And had no problem for a few weeks. But now the symptoms are back again. Sometime easy to start sometime won t. Gas is fresh, added some sthabil too for good measure.

Did you let the gas set in there?

Might just be dirty, clogged vent, jet. Mine is down for just that.

Possible yes but i find it hard to believe 2 carbs got clogged in the same manner with clean gas. The petcock screen also is really clean.

It doesn’t take much on those small carbs to cause problems. Pull it apart and clean it.

Also check the float level. If it’s an exact clone of the original carb then pull the factory jets out of the old carb and clean and install them. Also the emulsion tube and you might even want to use the factory needle and float.

I’ve used Chinese carbs for several applications with success but I generally use as many of the original parts as possible and make the best carb I can out of the two.

I thought I cleaned the heck out of my carb. When I got it back in, I found out I did not. :-(

Clean and reclean. Goofaroo had some good advice on swapping OEM parts over. There could be slight differences.

Get some dental floss and clear out those passages.

I will clean it up and sonicate the whole carb as well as jet and needle. Done that on wifey gummed up ttr 125 ... worked lile a charm👍

Sometimes hoarding pays! lol

You might recall that I used to live right up the street from you in Timber Ridge. I have moved out to south Guthrie. If you keep having trouble feel free to come out to my shop and I’ll be glad to look at it. I may even have some jets for it.
