1995 RMX250 compared

My buddy finally got his RMX in the woods, and we swapped for a short trail ride.
He says “your bike (KDX) feels like an MXer”
I said “your bike (RMX) feels like a nice little trail bike”

I fully expected the oppo.
He is running a 36mm carb vs the normal 38.
But it felt smaller softer and much more easy going than my KDX.

Did it feel longer? How was the suspension?

Nice little ride. But doesn’t make me want to trade.

It felt lower and softer (and generally like a smaller bike) We only got short swap ride ... maybe 10min on the logging roads. I hope to get a bit more seat time another day for better info. It did not feel longer that I could tell, but think I’d have to hit some harder stuff to get a good feel.
Many discussion posts I have seen prefer the RMX over KDX. But.... maybe not a $4k KDX.

I was riding a buddy's DRZ 250 4t for awhile and really liked the suspension in the woods. It had good power but not the hit that my KDX can deliver. Surprisingly though my KDX is a lot better on steep loose hill climbs - or maybe my riding improved? I'm looking forward to getting my suspension tuned next month. If it worked as good as that DRZ I'd be pretty stoked. Would be fun to try an RMX - didn't try to find one though because parts availability is very poor compared to an H9.

My son has a 95 RMX250. It is nothing like the KDX, and I'm comparing to my hybrid. Suspension works better in the woods, more race oriented than the stock KDX. Makes better power, though we currently have him geared a bit high for the winter desert season. Easily feels taller than the KDX, though feels shorter than my hybrid and they are all within about an inch of each other. We also have a woods pipe and turbinecore silencer on it, not as quiet as a stock KDX, but not as loud as a 4T. Side by side the RMX will outpull the 220 but is a bit harder in the tight stuff to keep the wheel from spinning. I like them both a lot, wish they would have kept building the RMX's...they'd have a KDX cult following by now if they did.

That is fully what I expected. I had planned for the RMX to feel like KDX big bully brother. I am sure it has a lot to do with the setup of each bike. The RMX was either set soft or my impressive girth gave it a good squawshing. Mine is on tall side for its age now with MX forks and big back tire, and doesn’t drop as much when you hop on.
PS I haven’t hit $5k.... yet.

There sure aren't many RMX's out there. How many years were they made?

1989 - 1998

Yamaha WR250 (USA) was 1989 - 1997

Very interesting...here are two of my most recent purchases...1989 RMX250 survivor...it was originally owned by a farmer that would use it to go check on his livestock and then park it back in the barn..it has a PSI expansion chamber and Cobra spark arrestor just like Randy Hawkins ran back in his early Suzuki days...I was told the bike was "uncorked"...then my completely restored 1991 WR250...I was finishing up a second degree when I got them and then winter and the holiday season hit, so I haven't even been able to ride either one of those yet!!...I got on a kick where I wanted an "Enduro" model from each of the Big Four...I have my 2005 KDX200 and also a 1998 XR400R...I wish Honda would have made a 2T enduro bike in the 90s for the US market, but the XR will have to do

Thanks very much!...I also own a couple of KX250s, but one needs a complete rebuild and they're both really MXers so didn't include them...my wife says I have my own "mini-museum" LOL

I think the last 2 stroke enduro Honda made was the MR175/250. My dad had a 1977 MR175. What a nightmare bike it was. Point ignition that was always needing to be adjusted, a flywheel that was about half the weight it needed to be, and the woeful 5 speed gearbox. But it did have a very comfortable seat. The very next year after he bought the MR, Dad got a 1980 KDX175 ( I secretly wanted him to get the Suzuki PE, but oh well) and has never owned anything but a KDX since lol

That's awesome! At least he stuck with the KDX after that :supz: ...I really wish the US market could have gotten these...part of me would assume they were just a normal CR with enduro plastics and lighting, but I'd love to sample one nonetheless...
