If you're considering Maxima 927 oil (+ATC 250R)

Hi guys, I'm not trying to start another great oil debate or sell anyone a bottle of 927. I do still see people mention that its not a good oil to run if used on a trail bike. I have an ATC 250R that I installed a billet exhaust flange on this weekend. Its a trail machine, mostly 2nd-4th gear, 1/4-3/4 throttle with the occasional chance to wring it out. It has 52 hours on the top end and at least 5 of those hours were putting through the woods with my 7 year old daughter sitting in front of me. I looked into the exhaust port and it had a dark brown stain to it. When I swiped my finger it looked like your finger would look if you were getting fingerprinted (I was framed I swear!!). I sprayed some brake cleaner on a shop towel, quickly wiped out the exhaust port and it looked brand new. The same went for my KDX piston and combustion chamber when I sent the head out to RB. I'm not saying that other brands wouldn't do the exact same thing but if you've been on the fence about using it because someone has said it will gum things up, I say give it a shot. I've always found it to be a really clean oil to use on trail ridden bikes. The "ring" where the exhaust flange sits was never really cleaned up as good as the exhaust port when I did the top end and that shows some carbon. Heres a picture of the exhaust port and a couple of the 250R incase any of you guys like those. I had just got done cleaning it up from a pretty muddy day. I love that thing, its so fast but way more capable than people think it would be. If it goes up on two wheels the best thing to do is punch the throttle and get it sliding lol. The powerslide into a wheelie and still being able to coax the direction with your knees against the gas tank while sliding and doing a wheelie is like nothing else I've ever ridden. I guess this is a two part story...I started with the oil but I could talk about the 250R all day. I've got what seems like 100's of hours over the past few years going through it and getting it to where it is now. I bought it for 1500. It wasn't junk but it wasn't maintained to say the least. Every part is available for it through Rocky Mountain, Ebay, or amazon. Gotta love that.

Yeah, I don't run anything but 927. With all the fancy synthetics and additives today still nothing has the lubrication properties that real castor has when used in a 2T engine. The protection castor provides is extremely important for my riding in AZ were temps are high and I have to ride sand washes for extended periods. I have no problem with things gumming up in slow trail riding or hike-a-bike situations.

What year is the ATC, 1986?

I haven't been able to ride for a while, but was using 927 for years. If Mitch Payton ran it, then it must be good, in my eyes. :bravo:

It's a 1985. There aren't a whole lot of differences between the two years. I hope you get to ride again soon. I saw that video with Mitch Payton a few years ago about the 927.

This is a thread only about Maxima 927 and not a general "what oil do you use" thread.
