I thought I would add a little closure to this thread for future KX 420 thread spelunkers. I finished a cosmetic restoration of the bike, including new plastics, restored original tank, original-style decals, new tires, bars, grips and replacement aluminum right side foot peg. I never did get it running, however. I pulled off the stator cover at one point, and I detected a bunch of play in the crank bearings. So rather than embark on a total motor rebuild, I sold the bike to a fellow collector in my enduro club. I'll have to see if he succeeded in bringing it back to life. I'll try to find a "finished" picture.
