Swapping stator from H type to a C model?

So I'm working on a 1988 KDX200 belonging to a friend. It had lots wrong with it but the main issue was no spark, so took the flywheel off and found a mess. The magnets had all come loose on the flywheel and the coils had been damaged by someone in the past using long bolts in a puller . So I ordered a flywheel off a newer H (or E model)(figured I just do the stator mod) and some coils from RM Stator. The new coils are wrong, they aren't the same as the old ones so won't work. My question is can I use the stator from the H model instead? Those are relatively cheap to buy. The coils look the same but the plate is different, 3 mounting holes instead of 2 but maybe I could modify it?
Thanks for any help on this.

There are a few threads on here about using a 1995+ stator (plate and coils) with the 1995+ rotor. The mounting holes are slotted out to let it rotate to the proper alignment / timing placement.

Thanks, yes I’ve seen the posts about using the newer rotor and moving the holes in the old stator plate. But there seems to be nothing about using a new type stator like this one…

Doesn't mean it can't be done, just means nobody may have done it. Why don't you grab the parts and see if it would work?

In your original post, you asked nothing about an aftermarket stator. Sorry, I have not tried either method. I was just trying to point you to where others had given it a go. You might not get a ton of answers instantly about a 35 year old dirt bike.

Yes I hear what your saying, it's a very old bike and I imagine most have been scrapped by now.
I was assuming the aftermarket stator in the picture is the same as the stock stator for the E and H models. I figured somebody must have tried mixing the rotors and stators up but maybe not. I noticed that the parts fiche shows the 86-88 stator with 2 thin source coils stacked but mine only has 1 thick source coil so not sure if it's original. I might just try to rewind the damaged coil myself.

It’s easy enough to do. I made a couple threads on here with plenty of photos. My most recent ignition coil rewind was fun.

Is the copper wound coil not for the lights, and the other one is for the ignition?

Is the ignition coil bad, too? I can see where the copper coil is damaged.

If the ignition coil(s) are OK, then you will pay dearly to find a 1986 - 1988 flywheel to just bolt up. If you do find one, it may not be long before the magnets let loose. It is better to just get an H stator and rotor, then slot the openings to turn it.

The 1989 - 1994 rotor is a different part number than the 1995+ rotor.
The 1993 - 2006 stator is a different part number than the earlier stators.

The ignition coil looked ok but checked the resistance and it's no good. I bought a rotor from an 89-94 model, I'm wondering if the coils on the later models are the same size as the 86-88 coils. If they are I could just buy that aftermarket stator and use the coils.

What year rotor did you buy?

I am not sure on coil size. I know later stators have the coils angled.

The rotor I bought came off a 1993 model. I hope that’s going to work.

Local guy had a bunch of Lifan stators for $10 each. The coils were roughly the same size as the kdx ones, just had to elongate the mounting holes and they fit.
However I still get no spark. How do I know if the CDI unit is working?

Back in the day, Kawasaki dealers had CDI testers. They may still have them.

A CDI unit for this bike is unobtainable, I see Regulator Rectifier.com has a combo CDI/coil for this bike as well as a whole ignition system replacement but it's fairly expensive. Has anyone ever tried these? A CDI for the later bikes is fairly cheap on ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/271939273479?h ... SwdUVdWtn0 would those work on a 1988 model? The stock one also has 5 wires.

So I tried the later model CDI unit, they said it wouldn't work.... but it does. Just had to change a couple of the connectors. I got spark. Figuring out the timing was a pain, the new slots at 90 degrees were completely wrong, tried different positions and got nothing. I rigged up a timing light and put a mark at TDC and the new position was about 20 degrees counterclockwise. Just had to elongate the existing slots. The new lighting coil from the lifan puts out too much power and blows the lights so would have to put a regulator in, but I'm not too concerned about having lights.
