Another flywheel question.

Post by Big John »

My 85 kdx200, didn't come with a flywheel when I got it. I was told by someone that any kdx flywheel will fit but you have to alter the timing, by drilling new holes in the plate the stator is mounted on. Is this true?
I bought what I was told was a kdx200e flywheel but the flywheel is too large for the stator.

There’s a thread on here that has pictures gives a lot of detail about this. I can’t find it right now

I put an H ( 2003) model on my 86 KDX and the diameter was fine.
I did have to slot the stator plate and set the timing with a timing light.
Might be apples and oranges from an 85 to an E model but I think the 85 to 86 used the same parts.

Here is a photo of how mine ended up.
Original timing mark is at the bottom.

My 84 motor runs fine with an 86 CDI, so they must be extremely close

Thanks for the advice. Finally got a flywheel, put it on, hey presto, I had spark. Took a rough guess looking at the photo of the new slots. Drilling and filed new slots.
Then some fuel, choke and she fired up. I'll have to find my timing light to get it right.
I'm a little happier now knowing it will run.
