85 carburetor.

Post by Big John »

Hi, I'm new here and need a little advice on my newly acquired 1985 KDX200.
The carburetor is missing the needle, mikuni # 5FJ57 this part is no longer available through Kawasaki or Mikuni. Has anyone used or knows of a similar tapered needle that works in the KDX carb? Or may have a spare one sitting around that they want to sell me.
Or just a carb swap that will work?

Try calling someone that works at sudco.com. They usually have the more obscure carburetor parts.

Might be worth it to just replace the carb depending in the condition. How’s the slide, floats, float needle, and needle jet?

Everything in the carb looks good it is just missing the needle. I'll try Sodco, I live in Australia and have tried the mikuni importer here, he said Kawasaki do there own thing and have there own specific parts.

They are correct, often times manufactures such as Kawasaki contract these companies to make parts specifically for them, since they run such high numbers. Sudco might be able to help you find the closest thing, or you could even try a needle from an 86, though I don’t know how much of a difference it is and whether you’ll need the needle jet to go with it. The carbs are almost identical with jetting being the most significant changes between the years, since that was the year they added power valves. I hope someone else chimes in with more knowledge. Good luck!

Welcome to kdxrider.net.

Good luck on the search. 1986 and 1987 needles are the same way, an OEM specific part with no aftermarket perfect match like 1988 - 2006.
