Shock absorber bottom bushing trouble

Shock absorber bottom bushing trouble
I’m working on my shock, and the bottom bushing is trashed. I drilled out the rubber removed the spacer, but I can’t get the outer race of it out. I’ve tried the two sockets method, heated and hammered it just to weaken the bond and get it to budge, even tried just pressing the new bushing through (on the outer race with sockets). Nothing.
This is part number 92092-1054 for those that are curious.
Could anyone help before I have to take it to a shop? Grinding it down or something? Heat, penetrating oil and persistence? The body has damage from the socket pressing on the body, so I don’t want to break this thing. I’m sure a machine shop could bore it out, but I don’t want to go that far yet.

heat and penetrating oil, let it sit, repeat several times over a few days, then try. Alternative is to pack the race with dry ice and at the same time heat the outer part of the shock. A machine shop and a big press would work too if you dont have a press.

I can’t even find that part on a diagram so no help. Generally though heat and time work wonders.

Thanks, I like the dry ice idea. I recently had some trouble with a bearing and I just heated and oiled it over and over to break that bind it made with its seat. Is this on the shock body? If it has oil or nitrogen, skip the heating until it does not have oil or nitrogen.

Get a 20-ton hydraulic press from Harbor Freight and buy a 2-ton jack for bearings and such.

The part# he referenced is indeed on the shock body, so good call on draining the shock first. Also, if OP hasn't done so, remove the hose to the remote reservoir as it is in the same location. Given the apparent condition the shock warrants a full tear down anyways. The HF press is one of my most used shop tools, so many things are so much easier with it!

bufftester, on the 196 - 1988, that part is on the body, unlike 1989+. I didn't remember him having a C model at first.
If you do get one, apparently they sell a bolted together one and a welded together one. Research which might fit your needs.

A wise man once said, "A man's got to know his limitations". :-)
I think it might get it apart and back together with the proper fixtures, but I would not try it. I think it would be really difficult to get it aligned very well without buying even more expensive equipment.

I just did some googling and found this trick guys use where they weld inside the race of a bearing and when the weld contracts it contracts the race with it so it drops out. Pretty cool.

Guy at the shop grinded out the old race with a Dremel and then pressed it in like any other bearing.
