Has anybody got a pic or tell me the order of the shock shims for one of these? My shock was in bits when I got it and about to put it together but not sure on the order of the shims. Little diff to a modern shock LOL

PLEASE do not post the same question to two different subforums.

Yes. They are a lot different.

Any chance you might have measured them?

There should be a stack of the widest ones that go against the face of the compression side of the piston. There should also be a stack of somewhat less wide ones that will go on the face of the rebound side of the piston.

Like a modern shock, they will taper down from there.

Hopefully that will help a little.

Gotcha, my bad. Yes I have measured them all. there are 2 with 3 wings? for a better word, 2 x 36mm face washers, 3 other washers, and a star shaped washer. 3 washers for the rebound side. Hardly shims as thinnest is the tip washers, and then the washers at .15, .5 and 2mm. the 36mm ones are .7 with a 20mm hole in the center so that the winged and 2 of the other washers fit inside. Hard to explain unless you have seen inside one

It has been a long time, but that does not look right. I do not remember a star washer at all. Shouldn't there be more shims?

Can you post a picture of the whole shock?

I've recently torn apart my 87 shock. I completely disassembled the valve stack to clean for grit, and I can say mine looked nothing like that. No star washers. I also had a ton of similarly sized washers, kinda like the one below the nut. Mine was probably double the amount of shims you have. Looks like something's been goofed up, or maybe the 86 was completely different. Piston looks the same though

I think there were around 7 compression shims on 1987 and 1988. I have not had a 1986 apart. 1987 and 1988 have the same rod and piston / shims.

This shock only has a 4 way compression adjuster up the top. Works a needle down in the shaft that opens and closes a hole. Beginning to wonder if this shock is an earlier model shock? Should it have an adjuster on the resivor? as this does not? or is that an 87/88 only thing?

AND NOW YOU KNOW... the rest of the story.

Image

The reason I asked about a pic of the whole shock was just for this reason. It is NOT a 1986/7/8 shock. 1986/7/8 have a compression adjuster on the reservoir, with rebound adjuster up top. The rebound now has around 20 clicks.

If you get time, please post a pic of the shock. We can guess better that way.

Ok so after a bit of searching it seems this bike at some stage has been fitted with an 84/85 shock!!! Still have the same problem with how all this goes together until I find another shock!!!

Hmm. See if member Clatter took his apart. viewtopic.php?f=100&t=23226

I have never taken apart a KDX shock older than 1987.

So, I was going through my phone, and I found this.

Image

That's my valve stack for the 87 shock. I don't know if the piston was the right way up or not, but that's the order. Notice the bottom right shim has the marks of the bottom of the seal head on it, so that one is on top.

And KDXGarage you were right. The pistons are different. My memory doesn't serve me well.

I know this is a bit irrelevant now since OP has a different shock, but this might help someone on this forum in the future, so I might as well leave it. Just trying to pay it forward.

Worked it out
For anybody else wondering the above pic is the correct order, apart from the top washer which goes on before the 2 smaller ones. Thanks for the reply's, Now to find a correct one for the bike!! This one will work for the time though

'69candy',
The shock you pictured is an '84-'85 model?

You were also able to verify that the pic 'kdxsully' was showing was correct for '87?

Will have to dig up some pics,
But for some reason my '85 shock was different.. Hhmm..

That’s the exact order of my shims as I pulled it out of my shock. Whether it was messed with in the past is a whole other thing..

And just to clarify, the very first shim on top is the bottom, and then you read it like a book, until the last one is the top. And as far as the piston and that special shim goes, I don’t remember which way was up or down.
