Can you seal an old flywheel?
I just happen to have a spare flywheel for my 1984 kdx200 motor. I was wondering if anyone knows whether it’s possible to seal these. I’ve seen Jeff Fredette’s remanufactured ines I now here and how he sealed them. I was also thinking about getting specs on this thing if anyone happens to be them in the future (stuff like magnet polarities/positions, etc). Let me know if this is anything worth contributing.
While I’m looking at it, the bowl has some rusting and a tad bit has rusted away. Should I fill it in and smooth it out with something?

There was a guy on here a coupe of years ago, offering that service from home. He had done some on the Tecates.

Usually I search my questions before posting, I probably would've seen that if I remembered to search. Wonder if he's still around.
Anyways, I'll try to embed this photo. There's a little bit missing on the edge there. I'm wondering if this is enough to throw it off balance if it's mounted on a bike. Maybe a weld and file is in order?

I'm trying to decide if I'll wait for a failure in my current flywheel (knock on wood) and figure something out then, or if I should email Mr. Fredette again and see if I can just end up with an extra. I'll ponder this for a bit.

I'd like to have one sealed on the inside, but I don't know if this one could be salvaged and sealed or if I'd have to do my current one. This is new to me.

So, I’ve pulled my flywheel. As you can see in the pictures, the magnets have been heavily epoxied with what looks like marine epoxy. Feels tight. Now, I’m wondering why my 1984 flywheel has three magnets, and this has four. I’ve checked the serial on my motor, and it came out as 1984. Does a 1987 stator and flywheel work in a 1984 motor?? Timing and everything? Also, what are those drill holes on the outside? Some kind of signature? I don’t think those are supposed to be there

I will guess that the holes are to balance it out by removing material. Just me guessing. :-)

Oh, in lieu of a weight? Added a picture of the stator as well, if anyone could identify the year. Added some more epoxy in the cracks for some extra insurance.

Another thing I’ve noticed. I have a 1987 (really 1988, for some reason it just says 1987) manual, and the torque specs for the flywheel bolt is 20 ft lbs? That seems low. Doesn’t the torque of the nut put the flywheel all the way back on?

green cover or white cover?
green is 1987
white is 1988
1987 is owner AND service
1988 is one manual for owner, one for service
I don't have mine handy, so I can not check it.
1995 + is 47 foot-pounds for the nut.

White cover. And it’s a service manual, not owner. I have to refer to the Australian model for the carb since they switched carbs between the two years.
And 47 foot pounds seems... safer. I’m gonna sniff around and see if I can produce a different answer or not.

This is for a 175, but it gives me more confidence in my mismatched manual. This guy broke the bolt in his crank trying to do 47 ft lbs. I guess these air cooled kdx’s really do have low torque specs for the flywheel bolt. I’m going with 20 ft lbs.
