I picked up a seal puller for 12 bucks and it popped very easy, before that I was doing the same thing. Save yourself some grief.

Consider replacing your CS sprocket and the metal collar at the same time as the seal and o-rings. They all work together as a system to seal, and if you replace only the rubber parts, but the metal parts are also worn, you might not get your leak to stop. Ask me how I know!

Why the CS sprocket? When the snap ring is in place, the sprocket is actually pressed against the collar, which then presses against the o-rings on the shaft.
