KDX200A2 1984 engine swap with kx 125

Post by Timster »

Looking to find out any info of this topic feel free to share please.
I had found a 1996 kx 125 dirt cheap to day looks clean but the guy blew the crack.
Would this be suitable for a swap or where should I start this swap?

Probably would require some pretty serious frame modification. For starters, the air-cooled KDX has a side-exit exhaust which would surely run into the frame rails.

I have been thinking of this for awhile, and have mentioned it on occassion, about how cool it would be to see an air cooled engine swap into a kx250f aluminum frame. The 250Fs have a longer single downtube before the engine cradle which should clear the exhaust port, likely the biggest issue would be getting a pipe to fit, but then you'd have no radiators mounted to worry about either....This is working its way up my list for next project :hmm:

Similar in concept, there's a guy around here that has a Yamaha Blaster engine shoe-horned into a CRF150R big wheel chassis, set up for trail use. He said it took some frame cradle modification, but he also said it weighed in at about 180 lbs wet! Looked like a fun trail ride for goofing around, but had to be a pretty expensive build for what it was.

I'm in the middle of something similar 1984 kdx200 in 1999 kx500 frame.the motor slid right in after I ground 3/16 of in inch off each side of the engine case to clear the linkage bracket that bolts in there with it. The frame has double down tubes as well and I was able to combine the two pipes to clear and make one. Wasn't that hard if u have fabrication tools and skills. I need to finish that bike up here b4 trail riding.

Another option is to use a 2004-2006 KX250F frame. They were steel (Or an RMZ since Suzuki and Kawa shared during that time) and have the single downtube extending far enough to allow the side exhaust to clear. Plus parts are cheap for them and plentiful. Like mentioned earlier the hardest part will be pipe fitment, but then you have the bonus of not having to worry about radiators, so you gain all that working room!

I traded a cart frame I had for a 05 kx250f rolling chassis today that is all tore down and ready for paint. I'm gonna put the 200 air cooled out of my other hybrid in this frame as he down tubes will b perfect. I'm stoked. I've got the motor and I've got $175 in the cart frame. So I can throw 700 at it in suspension rebuil/valve. New plastic. And have a light sweet trail bike for 1k. Can't wait to get started. I was gonna do a lc kdx motor. But think ac would b neat. I loved my buddy's 1986 kdx

Kinda what I'm shooting for to match my klx250s such will be relieved of serious trail duty. I won't miss throwing around 80 extra pounds.
