Throttle has no free play

Post by Bryanmb30 »

Rebuilding my 1990 KDX200 that I got off marketplace. Noticed the throttle almost felt tight, there was absolutely no free play. Any movement on the throttle opened the carb up. Tried adjusting the cables, they were as tight as they could be. Loosening them only made the throttle tighter. Didn’t find much on YouTube about it. Just trying to get that 3-5mm of free play in the throttle. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I would take the throttle apart and clean, inspect and lube it. (and take the cable out and clean, inspect and lube it, too).

It may not have had any lube since summer of 1989 when it was made.

Remember, threading the adjusters "in" is what loosens them, not out.

Could it be that your cabling was a hackjob resulting in the cable being a smidge too short? Also check if the throttle tube is fitted with a lot of free space from the handle bar. It should have a little space so that it's not sticky but any more is a waste.
