stock muffler

Post by bac »

is the stock muffler supposed to have 'glass packing? mine doesn't but is not the least bit loud (it's also cut off just before the spark arrestor section). on the diagram there is a part that looks like it could be packing.

Shame someone cut it up. IMO it's the best silencer design every put on a bike by any manufacturer.

Here is a pic of the internals from an '89 to '94 stock silencer. Bottom left is the silencer packing. Sorry it's not a better pic.

I just got one off ebay to replace the cut up one. looked worse than that inside- the packing was basically pretified! I think I'll try running it without first.

is it true that an aftermarket muffler (by itself) sees no gain in power over the stock one? if so then there's no reason I should experiment with modifying the baffle section (drill holes, shorten the small pipes, etc)?

Silencers normally have very little impact on power unless plugged up or damaged. Put in the packing. It was designed to use it and helps to keep your bike more on the quiet side. Well, unless you're trying to make it louder but no one should be going after that since it doesn't help the bike in any way and only serves to give the anti-OHV recreation crowd more ammunition to lock us out of areas.

Modding the stock E-series silencer? Don't do it!

The packing is part of what gives it performance with back pressure timing. Keep it in for more power and less sound.
