found this today (bike is new to us). is it 'safe' to bake these pipes (factory) or does the double wall thing affect the success of that method? otherwise am I stuck scraping it out or...?

between this and one of the exhaust valves installed wrong I'm excited about an improvement in performance once it's all taken care of.

Since you got it, have you changed the piston and rings?

Someone ran it for a loooong time without doing some pipe maintenance.

I am not a fan or burning it out. Then it looks like sh&& on the outside afterwards. Scraping and Eazy-off Over Cleaner will help. Also, some nuts or bolts thrown inside and shook up will break it loose also.

The bike will indeed gain some performance after it is cleaned up. Most of the gunk is at the entrance to the pipe.

When you get to cleaning it, DO IT OUTSIDE. It makes a HUGE MESS!!

I have also used a length of steel braided wire with an end chucked in a drill to use as a spinning cleaner. DO NOT let it come out, as it will whip you bad! It does not have to spin at high speed to knock loose carbon.

Basically, look up a real old picture of a chimney sweep worker. Same result, really.

What a nasty pipe.
Smoking it out leaves a horrible smell and last time I did it, I was coughing for a whole day afterwards. Drain cleaner works good without a mess but spilled some on driveway and now I have grass growing out of the hole it left
