New gas tank from Clark MFG

Post by Toonces »

In the nineties, I kept contacting Clark about a gas tank for my 1983 Yamaha IT250. After about the 10th time in a year, they said they were gong to start making the mold for one. Four months later, I had a new tank. I'm hoping we can do the same for our E model. You can contact them with this info:

Toll Free: 1-800-232-2002

Direct: 503-829-2156
Fax: 503-829-6269
Email:sales@clarkemfg.com

Don't know it will work but it sure can't hurt to try.

Thanks! I hate that mine has a crack in the bottom. I have to empty out after each session so it doesn't all slowly leak out.

I'll shoot em a message.

Get Seal All from O' Reily and patch your tank leak. It works.

My take is plastic welded. I'd still like a new one as I'm sure other would as well. I've called twice and will continue to do so. I hope others do too. I'm sure if they get enough inquires, they will produce one. I've seen it happen before with a 1983 Yamaha IT250.

I've been calling about every three months. I let them know that if they decided to make the tank, they would have the market cornered as no one else is making it. Seriously, y'all should call and or email them. Lets make this happen.

I've talked to them a couple of times with the same response--they don't have any intention of building a tank for E model KDXs.

https://clarkemfg.com/catalog/kawasaki/ ... -capacity/

Anyone remember what was needed to use a KDX tank on a KX? I know Dirt Bike magazine did it back in 1993 or so so they could get the extra capacity. Was it just the seat, or was there more to it??

OK, I've contacted them several more times since my last post. The nice lady explained to me that it's expensive to to produce a new tank because of several factors including making a mold. Totally understandable. We just need to make sure there is enough demand to reassure them that it's going to be worth their effort. So call and or email. Not just once but periodically.
I'm sure there are a lot of people who would like to be able to buy a new tank. Mine is starting to look like Frankenstein with all the patches and repair scars all over it.

Did they tell you how many they need to sell to make it worth the tooling investment?

I called them a few months ago and they didn’t seem interested. I’ll try again.

I also called IMS and Acerbis. No dice.

I don’t know how the E model fell off the radar for these companies. It had a 5 year run compared to the 86-88 3 year run and obviously Kawasaki sold a pantload of E models. You would think they would have offered at least an oversized version.

It would be a gamble considering how common it is for these tanks to crack.

I don't think it is common for them to crack. Many on here have a 1989 - 1994 KDX200 and have not had a cracked tank. Obviously, this thread is a collection of people who DO have issues. I have seen a few on here with issues where someone damaged the inserts for the shrouds. Maybe some gentle soul cranked down on the petcock bolts of you guys' tanks.

Hmmmm. Could be. But it’s a very awkward location for it to crack. It’s gonna take some effort and engineering to make this tank reliable again. I’m kind of thinking about trying to coat it on the inside somehow.
