E series Fuel Tanks

Post by wolf400 »

Hi all,

I'm currently mid way through rebuilding a 1993 KDX200.
I have been attempting to avoid green and such am looking for a new tank. Are there any aftermarket tanks available for the E series?

Also, does anyone know whether or not the metal tank from the sr model would fit right on an e model?

Finally, has anyone restored their original green tank to a decent finish?

Thanks so much in advance!

No known source for am tanks on 89-94 kdxs, don't know about the status of tanks there are a lot of good vids on utube for cleaning up old tanks.

In theory, with some mods, you can fit a kx500 tank. I don't know that I have actually seen it done. The kdx seat would have to be modified to mate with the tank, or a kx500 seat with modifications to match up to the kdx rear fender. In theory, at least.

The old plastic tank can be cleaned up super cheap, as long as you don't mind taking the time. Wet sand starting with 400 grit, then 1000, then 2000 sandpaper. If you take your time, it will look brand new when it's done.

I think 1988 - 2004, but you might need the seat and maybe some other parts also.

Need to make brackets for fairings to fit radiator, use kx500 seat and fill the seat back with more foam so it sits lower on the rear kdx200 guard

That looks darn good.

Forgot to mention, need to use acerabis fuel tap with single stalk so that you have a reserve. Got to drill the tap hole out a smidge for it to fit

I sure would like to have an SR KDX to legally ride around here.

Yeah that's the key mate. Its oddly shaped like a mushroom. It's is a 1990 F model (or SR as you call it). Road reg model with 19inch rear wheel.
You can see in the pics that I upgraded to the single core chinese raditors for $125AUD (stock ones are twin core). They look awesome and weld quality is good. I have also settled on a sprocket ratio of 13/43 (Stock being 14/45 on the SR).
It is also currently being registered on our historical registration system being greater then 30yrs old.
This means that I only have to pay $42 AUD for full registration and insurance per year. It also means that I can only ride it for a maximum of 60 days a year but they are pretty relaxed on policing it. There is a logbook system.

You are supposed to enter departure date and time in your log book before you peel off.
If you get pulled over by the cops and they check your logbook and it doesn't have this departure filled in, your in the ****.
Not sure what the penalty is though. I forget all the time on my other historical vehicles. Unlikely to drive them more than 60 days anyway.
