Powering multiple items with stator output

Post by Railinandnailin »

Hey guys I am wondering about how to power multiple items on my bike. I have a 35w headlight and a 10w tail light/5w brake light, and would like to add a horn, and led strips for license bracket+turn signals. The stock stator is around 45w so I need more power, so I am thinking I need a battery or capacitor otherwise get a more powerful stator, which is harder. The positive and negative currently go right to the lights, so that would go to the capacitor/battery if used and whatever out from there. What is a good battery or capacitor to use or should i try something else? Any info will help thanks.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the stator is anywhere near 60w..

Hi, first do the stator rewind, buy the tusk street light kit, a $4.00 radio shack rectifier and a $10.00 lead sealed battery at eBay. The set up works really good and is maintenance free. Here is the tread: http://www.kdxrider.net/forums/viewtopi ... 77&t=16580

Hey thank you for that. It has a lot of useful information. Would a stock stator not be enough to charge the battery?

I don't think so, look for stator rewind by slick nick for instructions on how to do it. Is cheap and easy or you can buy one from Ricky stator for around $80 instead of $10 by doing it yourself. Another benefit of the stator rewind is that you will have better illumination for night riding.

Stock is 40 when going at high RPM. We wish 45.

That works well, also. I haven't tested it's output, but I suspect the advertised rating is on the conservative side.

Does anybody know if there is an option to slim down the air filter? I need to make some room for a battery and the stock (i think) air filter is really bulky.

Powering multiple items with stator output

The Baja Designs D/S kit uses a small battery pack (the battery is really only needed to run the horn - it's a power hog) which is made up of AA batteries wired in series.
When I bought my plated KDX (with a BD D/S kit installed) the battery pack was shot so, I rewound the stator and soldered up my own battery pack from these (3000mah vs B/D's 700mah):

I've been running this set-up for two years with no problems... I do use a Battery Tender Jr. during storage to keep the battery pack topped off - and learned after using the Ni-MH batteries that they may not be the best for the task do to a limited lifetime, but have had no problems thus far. The BD D/S kit tucks them up behind the headlight...
Don't know if this'll work for your situation - but it is a big space & weight saver!
