Honing a 1993 Cylinder

Post by icepick »

I just tore my son's 1993 KDX 200 apart to check the KIPS 'cause of the splooge coming from the pipe and the governor tube, (the gears were chewed up) looking in the cylinder, there are a couple of small grooves in the wall, and I think a quick honing will clean them up, I've read that I shouldn't hone the cylinder on an E model, but I've done this before on other engines, with good results, I know there are probably a lot of different opinions, on this, so i thought I'd see if anyone has done this and not trashed their cylinder.
Thanks

Is the cylinder in stock form, with a plated cylinder, or did someone bore it and sleeve it?

If someone bored it and sleeved it, then you can hone it. Otherwise, it needs to be replated. (Langcourt, Millenium Technologies, etc.)

As Jason noted, if it's stock don't hone it or you'll end up needing to get it replated anyways. The plating layer is not thick and you can easily run a hone right through it. The E models are notorious for eating the KIPS subvalve teeth, and they are getting difficult to locate. Once it's all back together and operating normally you'll need to run through the jetting procedure to deal with the splooge. The KIPS valve isn't the source of that but not operating it will compound it.

Look around on the internet...it will be apparent when you know what to look for.... thin steel piece inside cylinder area

Throw up some pics and the answer will be pretty quick. If the top end has never been worked on then it is plated.

Looks plated, though easier to tell from the other end of the jug and with a picture that doesn't require a magnifying glass for us old guys
