Oil drain plug hole stripped

Post by Gotanubike »

Anyone have the specs on the hole/thread size of the bolt? I looked around for a piggy back self tapping plug but nobody had anything smaller than 1/2". If I knew the size of the bolt I could probably find one online..

Oil drain plug hole stripped

I want to say it is 10mm x 1.5. But if the case is stripped then a new bolt won't help too much. You may need to drill it to the next size and re tap the hole.

Mine was stripped, I bought a 7/16-20 tap and a 25/64 drill. Put some grease on the drill and tap when you use them and it will hold a lot of the metal chips when you drill and tap it. Then buy a 7/16-20 bolt and you are good to go. I had a thread on this before, but the search function still is not working.

I would recommend using helicoil. Stronger yet allows you to use back the same bolt size. But the kit is more expensive then just drill and tap.

Helicoil's tend to seep when used for a drain plug unless you can find a plug with a large enough head to completely cover the insert.

i dont like using helicoils for something that sees as much tightening and loosening as a drainplug

My bro works as a service tech at a goodyear, and he has some stuff he can bring in and do the drill and tap. They should have just done steel inserts from the factory, aluminum is just too soft!

I used helicoil, not a seep. maybe tats becos I added a copper crush washer. Regards to as much tightening and loosening...thought helicoil inserts should be encourage instead compared to the engine case soft aluminium. :hmm:
