New Project Bike

Post by eprovenzano »

I'm a KTM guy, I ride a 2001 KTM 380, my son has a 2000 KTM 300. I just finished a rebuild of a 2006 KTM 250SXF. I'm not a 4 stroke guy, and the 250 will be sold. I've purchased what I thought was a 96 KDX 200 as a project bike. It turns out after some investigation it looks like its a 92. I've been looking for a spare buddy bike that's cheap, easy to ride, not too intimidating for novices, but will go just about any where... I purchased the KDX without seeing it for a whooping cost of $75.00 I'll pick the bike up next week.

The bike has been sitting for a while. From what I gathered so far the head and cylinder have been pulled... Based on what the seller told me other potential buyers told her, the cylinder is scarred and will need to be re-plated. The head and cylinder have been off the bile for at least 2 - 3 months while it's been sitting in a shed. I'm concerned about rust on the crank and crank bearings. So with the cylinder re-plating, and crank repair / replacement, I'm already looking at over $500. I don't know the condition of the tires, chain, sprockets, clutch, wheel bearings, etc... Cosmetics I'm not too concerned with, so for misc parts lets add $200. I'll be doing all of the repairs myself, but I still see spending around $800 on this project, which puts it close to its market value. Like I said It's going to be a buddy bike so I really don't want to invest to much, I think it will be a fun worth while project

Here's a pic of the bike in its current condition. All the bits and pieces are supposed to be there... yes I'll check and make sure its all there when I go to pick it up. Plans are to completely disassemble re-grease everything... repaint the frame, scrub everything, re-plate the cylinder, new top end. I'm hoping the bottom end is ok, but... we will see. I'm not concerned about the plastic. I'm more concerned with the mechanical workings. I'll put together a rebuild thread to document the progress

For $75 bucks I would have been all over that myself. Looking forward to the build. :supz:

Well I contacted the seller to make arrangements to pick up the bike. Unfortunately I and was told the daughters boyfriend wants the bike and they were going to give it to him... Damn... :butthead:  Oh well, the search continues.

look on the bright side, at least you get to hang on to the KTM for a little while longer because it has been scientifically proven there is a link between getting a running KDX and getting rid of a KTM

just wait till you put a day and half on on the KDX and feel about as tired as you would after 20 minutes on the 380 ;)
