On several other occasions, I would come up to a similar log, and sort of kiss my front tire off of it, then throw my bars forward when my rear hit.

My question is, how is the correct way to hit the log? The second technique I've listed is how I usually climb the logs that are 2ft+, but the smaller logs seem all right to wheelie over, didn't throw me off or anything. What do you think?
No, No- do what I would do; Hit it hard and go over the bars.

On a log. Just before the log lift the front end to where the tire will graze and slightly bounce upward. Do not clear the log with the front. hit the throttle to launch the back wheel off of the log. this will drive the front higher and not down like when you wheely your front tire over and clear the log then slam the back into it. The bikes attitude will stay mostly level if done correctly.
