CRDX 200 or KDR?

Post by mudsplasher »

Hi, I'm a noobie here, but not to KDX's, having owned three.

I have decided that I want a CR hybrid, so I started picking up parts from a '01 CR250. So far what I have is, frame, sub-frame, swingarm, rear shock linkage and forks.

I have a strong running '97 KDX200 and will have to decide whether to use my engine or pick up another.

How available have the KDX engines been?

I haven't found one on E-Bay in the past week, unless I am using the wrong search parameters.

I just did another e-bay search using motor instead of engine, and there is a '02 200 engine on there, only 80 miles away from me.

Use the newer style pipe and it will make the conversion easier. Do you have your triples already? If not I have an extra set.

Ebay is fickle. You can look for something for weeks with no luck and then all of a sudden three or four will pop up.

Newer style pipe? I have another FMF Gnarly for my '97, is this the same as the newest ones?

The forks I bought come with triples, caliper, and axle.

Through the years I have found that on E-Bay, a lot of sellers believe they have gold to sell.

When you're looking for something specific on ebay, check every day or two, sort by 'newly listed' to save you some hassle, and save to your favorite searches.

Yeah, 95 or newer has a lower pipe style. The older ones go high and have clearance issues with the engine and radiator (don't ask how I know)

I did a '99 CR 250 hybrid. Went pretty easy. The pipe was tricky. I got lucky in that a friend had a CR pipe from a '96 250. I welded the cylinder snout off a KDX pipe too it and it fit well.

I also got lucky in that I picked up a CR rolling chassis to start with and a complete KDX with a blown motor.

Rode 20 miles yesterday in tight single track. Kept up fine with some fast guys on a YZ250 and a Husaberg.

Best woods bike I've ever owned!

If you need the drill for the rear engine mount, let me know. Also, I have the aluminum needed for the engine mounts if you need some.

Good luck!
