Assuming we are talking about the same year model, which bike would be better for cross country racing a KX250 or KX125/KDX hybrid. The 250 would have whatever mods I could find to help it's low end and rideability (flywheel weight, etc). The KDX hybrid would have the usual (pipe, reeds, RB head and carb).
The specs list the 2003 KX250 at 213# and the 2003 KX125 at 192#. I was under the impression that nearly everything on the two bikes was the same except the frame and motor. Where does that extra 20 pounds come from, the motor?
How much heavier is a KDX200 motor than a KX125 motor?

The KX250 transmission is horrible in open stuff. That's really the only downfall of that setup. It's less work than a hybrid, and you get a motor with more potential than the hybrid.
A KX250 with a WR tranny swapped in from some bike would be amazing for that type of stuff. A lot of people do it on YZ250s, which would be a better choice of bike.
Ever thought of a used 250EXC?

That's part of what makes the KDX....Along with a great powervalve, properly sized carb, proper porting, proper ign setup, etc. All designed from the ground up for it's intended purpose. By the same token that's what makes KX's/YZ's/etc great MX bikes.
My WR is a great example of a half-assed 250 enduro...Bulbous tank, FWW, 18" wheel, and WR trans slapped into a straight up MX bike. MX susp, ign, carb/jetting, porting, etc....Didn't even come from the factory with a light! Still love the bike though...I've fixed a lot of it's downfalls, and I think it's cool owning the last blue 2T enduro.
I'm a big EXC fan....KTM does a lot of little tuning items in between their models.

WOW!!! LOOK AT THAT TANK!!!
How's the suspension on yours? My '92 had ferocious "Yamahop" that put me on the ground more than once. I'd be tooting along pretty slow, catch a rock or something, and the thing would just LEAP sideways.
I have some old video of me on mine- maybe I'll get it up on YouTube... here's a few of my current YouTube vids, FWIW:

Yeah, I wish the seat went straight accross. That huge saddle kinda sucks. The YZ seat/tank is better, and I was able to find an old IMS YZ tank. The thing is pretty stoutly outfitted from ebay part-outs/aftermarket clearance sales thanks to the fact that it's the same as a 93-95 YZ. The stock susp on the thing is very harsh....Straight from the YZ...Not as bad as you describe though as it was a very big generation improvement. Have the whole stock susp sitting on the side as I found those Pro-Action forks/shock all setup for my weight for under $200....These work quite well as woods speeds. The stock susp is for ludacris speed.
