I have considered a kdx200 hybrid a few times and have not tried it yet, but I am considering it again. I want to race it though in gncc and enduro races. There doesn't appear to be any rules against this in the ama rule book except one that states that the production engine cases must be used, but displacement changes are allowed in order to qualify for different classes. I don't really understand what that means for hybrid bikes and it kind of sounds like the engine and frame must match as it came from the manufacturer. It also states later in the rules that frame modifications are allowed.
Anyone know if hybrids are competition legal?
I did send a message to the ama on facebook, I don't know if they will get back to me or not. If they do, I'll post their answer.

Find your regional AMA director, assuming you are wanting to race in AMA sanctioned races.

They are legal in most AMA events unless it is a "Vintage" rules event which has specific limits on different items (primarily brakes and suspension). For most AMA GNCC/Enduro everything is based on displacement. The engine/frame requirement is for ATVs only. The only other caveat is that once you qualify for an event you can't change anything

Yes, AMA legal in age classes and displacement classes as long as you register in the your displacement class or a larger one.

Re: Are hybrids AMA competition legal?
thanks for the replies, I'll be riding in either my age class or maybe I'll try the lites class since I'd have a 200, so I should be good. Most races have you put a manufacturer and CC size on the entry form. if you had a yz125 or something frame with a kdx engine, would you put yamaha, or kawasaki? This probably doesn't matter as much, but I would assume you'd put the frame brand down.

Yes, the AMA goes by the displacement stamp on the cylinder when inspecting generally. You could always register as a Kawaha, or a Yamasaki lol
