And it's got a blown top end, and a cylinder is like 419.00, that is to say quite a lot... I know the rear swingarm is a bit of work in the making but it's tempting to hybrid it. It feels pretty good standing over it.

I definitely would like to see that. But if you just want it running with the minimum hassle, you should also check out getting it converted to a 144. Basically the same price as a replate, standard pistons, etc. You can get it ported how you want it. They rip if you don't need the gearing and torque of the KDX where you ride.

I'm wondering if I should try to find another kdx engine for the project or just use the e-series one in my bike. I suppose I could sell the fork swap setup from the kdx along with all the other parts or I could put the conventionals back on and sell the rm forks, find another motor for the kdx and put my good one in the yz. Thoughts? My goals are to still be able to ride and to do it as cheaply as possible so perhaps it should be a winter project.

Truthfully, all of the Japanese manufacturers use the same two suspension companies, Showa or Kayaba. So the chassis are pretty much the same except for some fine tuning the Manf. specify for the internals and of course the Honda Aluminum frames are different. I kind of like the "small" size of the KDX frame or how the suspension is a little shorter. If the suspension was a little stiffer, it would suit me better in the woods. I don't like the tall suspensions in the slow sections where I can't put a foot down in case I have to.

I found a 134 kit with a fathead head for good money so I bought it and just got it running today. 2nd heat cycle done so I'll take it for a little rip tomorrow.
I'll try it in the woods around here but I think I need that smoooooth torque of the 200.

side note, tomorrow the rm forks on the kdx get the preload cut down as well. Hoping to plush them up a tad

That is a good outcome for the YZ. I'd ride it as a YZ for a while and work the suspension/ergonomic side of things and try to ignore the motor. I think you'd love it with a KDX motor in it.
I'd sure like to pick up a new project soon. I'm still thinking YZ/KX/CR chassis with an aircooled 2-stroke in it. Maybe a Banshee motor.....

I always loved the Yamaha WR200, nice engine (smoother w/o the big hit of the yz250)the bike was a little overweight overall. It's a shame they gave up on importing/improving it so quickly. Maybe a WR/YZ hybrid? Same idea as the kdx hybrid but in a modern yz frame???????????????? Probably be an easier fit around the swingarm.

You could sell the yz motor on ebay to a karter to finance the project. Maybe white plastics and updated WR200 graphics

Of course since it wouldn't involve any KDX parts none of us would be the least bit interested

Roger that. The KDX air cooled is a superior mill to the non-powervalved blaster motor....IMO. They CAN be made to make great amounts of power in the form of peaky top-end variety. The WR200 was a sweet bike!

You can get a Blaster up to 240cc with a range of powerbands as SOP from any builder, but it will be very thoroughly re-engineered before it runs the way a good bike motor does. Gear ratios are very interesting if you like trials-type activity. The problem is you need a custom pipe to put it in a bike chassis. And as pointed out, it doesn't have the fundamental technology of an H or even E KDX. If you're willing to spend the bux, it could be a cool result, but I think you'll end up with an all-around much better bike for massively less cash if you go with the KDX.

I don't know about the 02 bikes, but one of my riding buddies has a 06, and it's hardly peaky at all for a 125. The power on the bottom is quite good, and feels quite linear. When I rode it, I thought right away that it would make a good woods bike.

That's exactly how I felt riding this 134. I'd still have trouble on the tough technical stuff by my place but for more open trail riding with less crazy uphills it would rock. God the suspension was total crap for the woods. Like unbelievably bad compared to the kdx. Balance was great and the brakes were top notch.
I did buy it. Pick it up on sunday. Hope I love it as much as the 89. Unfortunately the yz and kdx have to go now. Someone's offering 1600 for the kdx. Don't know if I should take it or not...

If you can get $1600 for an 89 KDX, I'd jump on it.
