Nice write up!


Was your UNI filter just a single layer? From the pics it just looks like the outer coarse layer of the two-filter system. I've ran Uni filters on my YZ for about 6 years with no noticable dirt past it. Inner foam seemed the same the stock filtet and No-toil filters I also had.

I read a lot of posts from people swearing by UNI and Twin Air. When I was seeing the dirt passing through, I questioned my oiling technique. But after watching several videos of pro's mechanics oiling filters and one done by UNI, I realized I definitely wasn't under-oiling my filters.

The light test was quite telling. If light was shining directly through, then that represents a straight shot for a piece of dust/dirt. Not very likely that a particle of dirt would go straight through, but when you have tens of thousands of fine dust particles swirling around in a bucket, I guess some will find that straight path.

Out of curiosity, does your YZ use that rubber grommet where the bolt passes through?

I wold love to see you test the No-Toil filters, both the "quick filter" and the premium one.

No rubber grommet on the yz, just a big cupped washer that compresses the foam to a shoulder on the plastic cage.

To be fair, twin airs are my preference. The slightly smaller size makes getting the filter in and out much easier, without scraping half the dirt into the box.

But in this case I had to find out where the dirt was coming from before I did any more damage to the engine.

I would also like to see what the No-Toil filters did in the same test.

I will see if I can find a notoil at a good price to test out.

PM me an address and I'll send you a no toil for a YZ250. It is a different shape buts looks like it will fit the kdx cage well enough to seal.

Funny. My sand fill kdx purchase has a uni filter. Stone dry, and inner layer is not installed all the way down on the cage.

While on the topic of NoToil, for those that have used the original and the Evolution, does the Evolution do a better job of staying in the filter and not settling out over time?
