Need help revalving my KX250 Forks (2001)

Hey guys Im finally in the process of getting settled and was wondering if anyone out there has some basic settings, (shims etc) for these forks and if they would be willing to share. Im not looking for perfection here, just want them to be more trail friendly. There were some lengthy posts about the shim stacks but Im having trouble finding them. I have another bike that has excellent suspension so I just want my KDX to be a bit more off road friendly. Also if there's any info on shortening them, please let me know.
I am aware there is a ton of info here. I have read thru almost every post, but I am still a little apprehensive about diving into them. Im not looking for someone to do my "homework", just some shortcuts or tips to make them better. Of course Im also on a budget so sending them to a tuner isn't an option. I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has had these forks apart and is using a "good" setup for the woods.
Thanks to the group for all your help!
