Post by 1fletch »

Hi guys can anyone assist with the identification of this US Import to the UK Kdx 200 1996 forks and shock , the triples are stamped with kx 125 J on the underside and the shock looks modified or just not right

2006 KX250F ??

I think 2006 was the first year for a full-sized KX shock from Showa. 2006 was Showa, front and rear for the KX250F.

Do you think the lower shock has been drilled out to fit , as it has that hole and sits lower down, looks like that it has aftermarket lowering link also but not sure

That shock is off a 2006-2008 KX250F. The clevis has been hacked up to fit. I wouldn't run that. Also, the brake line is just zip tied to the forks?

Those footpeg mounts are also, um. Something....

The things people do to their bikes I'll never understand

The forks are definitely not '06 KX250F forks as I have those on my KDX. The top cap/adjuster, the fork guard mounting, and the triple clamp color is all wrong. However, I tried looking but I can't find anything with that particular fork cap.

Yeah not happy with rear shock being drilled going to swap that out for original or alternative
The foot pegs are welded on the wrong way round again coming off and being replaced
Was just hoping I can rescue the front end

What size are the forks? Those almost look like 43mm KYB’s off a mid 90’s KX

Are the right side axle pinch bolts just clamped down around the hex head of the axle?

Maybe the forks just have a Showa sticker on them. Check the lugs for numbers and letters. Math those up with some eBay listings.

At least someone was trying stoppies on pavement to wear the tire like that. :-)

So, older 43mm forks. I still didn't find anything when I looked but that does narrow down the year range a bit.

Some KX models they may be without checking the numbers on the lugs: (could be Yamaha or something else)

1994 KX125
1995 KX125
1994 KX250
1995 KX250
1994 KX500
1995 KX500
1996 KX500

Get the lug numbers and start looking at pictures of forks on eBay, current and sold listings.

That right fork lug keeps bothering me. It’s got that cutout at the bottom of the fork guard mount, almost like it’s supposed to have a speedo cable or something routed through it. Did WR’s in the 90’s have those forks?

I thought these looked familiar. They look just like my 1992 WR200 forks used to look with that little plate to hold the speedo cable, except that the 200 forks were 41mm. So a little ebay searching and it looks like 1992 YZ250 forks.

OR
WR500 forks

Strangely I couldn't find any 1992 WR250 forks with the 3S marking. Image searching parts though isn't always the most accurate, though.

Been searching myself and the more you read the more you realise that people have made all sorts of combinations work , I think it has the kx 125 triple clamps and these have been packed out with a spacer , bit of a Frankenstein this one 🤔

Yes, so Yamaha forks, KX triple, what about the wheel and axle? That axle looks too narrow for the width of the KX triples, and the rotor isn't Yamaha I don't think, so do we have a CR front wheel and axle? A true Frankenstein front end!

well, yeah, Yamaha emblem on the hub (tuning fork) kind of means Yamaha parts. :-)

790 on the rim means July 1990, so from a 1991 model
