2007 KX125 Forks on 2001 KDX220R

Post by mcbeth.059 »

My neighbour gave me a set of him a old KX125 Forks, so I'm in the process of getting them put on.

I've already pressed the KDX stem into the KX125 lower triple. No knurling was required, I threw the stem into the freezer for a couple hours, then applied some heat to the triple clamp. It pressed in with less than 10 tonnes of force.

I'm waiting for break at work to call a suspension guy local to me, but from my measurements the KX125 forks are 5/8“ longer than the KDX.

The brake caliper will bolt onto the 125 fork. But the axles are different sizes, so I'm going to find out which wheels are compatible and start working on that.

Check the diameter of the stem where the bearing mounts.

Good luck with the conversion.

lower bearing

Look at the different heights of the clamps (thickness if you will).

I see what you mean. I'll make a spacer for the lower stem bearing to sit on to compensate for the difference in height.

Is the diameter of the stem right above the new clamp not larger than the area where the bearing usually was?

It may not be, but is worth checking out. I think someone had mentioned it in the past about the bearing going down on the stem.

If he's using the KDX stem (which he is), in a KDX frame, then the bearings will both sit at their correct locations. Only thing you need is the spacer to raise the top triple clamp to the proper height and to fit the smaller diameter KDX stem in to the KX upper triple clamp's larger KX stem sized hole.
