Special tool 57001-1287 no-weld solution

Post by decluk13 »

I have benefited from others posting on dimensions of special tools that can be made so I thought I would share what I found works for 57001-1287. I did a search and didn't see anything come up on the tool number. This is a fork cylinder holder that I needed when converting my 00’ to a set of 94’ KLX USD forks. This can be made from PVC but I chose to use steel pipe for durability. All you need is a ¾” diameter piece of whichever material you have chosen about 16”long. Then mark the diameter at 12,3,6,and9 o’clock positions. Center a 10mm wide section on each of your marks and remove the excess. I used a hacksaw to cut perpendicular to the pipe then again to score across the waste area. The waste pieces were then easily removed by bending with a pair of needle nose. Next I used a file and removed any burs and rough edges. One of the benefits of using the steel pipe over PVC was that I was then able to heat (MAP gas) and flare the “tabs” slightly to get a bit more positive engagement on the fork cylinder landings. I don’t think this step is absolutely needed but seemed to help keep the tool properly engaged. I will eventually drill and add a T-handle to the non-tool end but I was burning work time, so I just put some vice-grips on to hold. The tool worked great for removal and install of the base valve. The real tool is about $30 so it isn’t really cost prohibitive, but less money on simple “special” tools is more money for go fast parts.
