Features and Benefits of 2002 KDX 200 &220

I have been looking for a clean KDX for some time now. Wouldn't you know that I would find a very clean 200 & 220, both 2002 models within one week. I have no personal knowledge of either bike (have ridden XRs for many years) and was hoping you guys could give the positives and negative of each model. I will be riding single track and ORV areas and have been comtemplating a few local Enduros.

Thank you for your input,

Britt

I agree.

You don't have to worry about the piston exploding and it rips out of the box.

The 220 is a rock crawler with a gernade for a piston stock.

Suppose the 220 in question has already had the piston replaced. Could you elaborate on the differences from there please? I mean beyond the fact that the 220 is a slightly bigger bore but with a smaller carb. I already have my steed, just curious.

The 220 is ported differently for lowend torque.... smaller carb, inconsistant head squish cut, bad piston, O-Ring chain... I think that's about it.

But they are a good bike for your girlfriend to start out on

Thank you for the input. I was unaware of the potential problems with the 220. I'll post the pics if I can work out a deal.

Jeeeeez, you 200 guys....

Pay them no attention bt1975. There is nothing wrong with the 220 that can't be corrected. The porting is just fine for a woods bike.

(Watch this thread turn into one of those 2T vs 4T arguments...)

Loosely from engine builders mouths "The 220 is no where near as good as a 200 bored out/ported can be. That being said I rode a 220, and liked the power delivery. I prefer the crisper 200 though, plus it's 200cc class legal, which is part of the reason it's 200cc's in the first place.

The 220 is better. It has 20 more cc's which makes it bigger... and bigger is better.

I'd take my fat ass on a E series 200 anywhere a 220 could go and probably a lot farther

I bought my first 220 (in 97) to replace the E series that would make this vertical rooty, rocky uphill on my favorite loop - that my new 200H could not.... after a year of pipes, reeds, etc. on the 200, I bought the 220 and was a happy camper again. I went through 2 of 'em and they WILL outclimb a 200 where there's no room to get a run. You set them up right and they will rev out very well too....better all around IMO. I got a 3rd place on a 97 220 (vet B as I recall) at the Virginia City GP on a 220 with only slightly modified stock noodle forks ( that was before the heads were moded). I didn't see no stink'n 200's around at all. Hah, and back then I didn't know about some piston exploding stuff.... and mine never exploded, but I swapped them out every season for drill.

My niece was womens CC expert class and she rode a 200 and wore pink gear to go along with it. They looked very nice together.

Any time I've ever ridden with gurlyboys riding 220's I've spent the better time of my day picking them and their gurlyboy bikes back up

Sometimes I even have to ride their gurlyboy bikes up the trail for them

I even had to ride an auto-clutched kx250 up a hill that skipoo could not make up on his own

Just building on the above information...
If you plan to have a big bore done in the future, the 200 is a better starting point because of the stock porting configuration. Eric Gorr himself showed and explained to me the differences when he did my 225 big bore.
