Thninking of 10-11 Tooth Front with 52-54 Tooth Rear

Since my 99 200 already had most of the bolt-on performance parts already on it when purchased, I've just got to do something different to "make it mine".

I'm not a hardcore rider pushing it to the limit, but more of a tooling around in the woods and small field.

My current sprocket setup is a stock front and 49 rear, which works fine, but I want to spend some money and sprockets are fitting right into the budget.

The smallest front I have found is a 10 tooth and the largest rear is a 54 tooth.

My main worry is fitment and stressing. A 10 tooth up front looks like it would be a awful tight turn for the chain. My concern out back using a 54 tooth would be the chain guide. I'm not looking to prematurely wear my equipment out.

Has anyone tried this combo, or have any feedback?

WAY Overkill!

Why would you want that short of gearing?

Mine is as short as I would ever want anything at 13-50

Geared like that you'll never use first or second gear, and probably not much of third.
Like Inda said, 2-3 up from stock in the rear is all you'll ever need.

The areas I ride (2 places) I rarely hit 4th gear.

Just figured I would gear it down for technical woods riding.

I have a 12/47 (A new chain and 13/50 are in the near future.) and that is plenty low enough for me. The places I ride also keeps you in the lower gears. mostly 2-4 and when you open it up you still have respectable top speed. The 10 in the front is an awfully tight wrap for a chain to go around = extra wear. If you need to spend money you might want to look into the RBD mods. :partyman: I have never tried a 52 or 54 but some where I heard you need to replace the stock chain guid if you go up much from stock in the rear. And if you go that small in the front you should have a few front slides on hand.

Thanks for the link, that actually gives me a very good starting point on gearing changes.

Perhaps my thought was "overkill" after plugging the numbers in..... Hmmm.

I don't know how accurate it is but it gives you an idea. Good luck.

I take it you don't know how they work.

I briefly read over it and understand that with an adjustment it can be switched back to normal.

It's just not my cup of tea at this point.

I don't have money flowing out my ears at the moment and if I had $300 to blow on the bike I would invest it into electrical upgrades or maybe the RB mods first.

I've got to buy tires for the truck, which is pretty much first on my list.

I can squeeze small bits of money here and there for the bike fund, so I'm starting with the small stuff for right now.

With that said, I really appreciate the use of the site and I plan on becoming a supporting member in the near future.

Well... nothing wrong with new sprockets and chain... For grunt though... 13-50 is about as low as you want to go.

i run a 12 front, stock rear........geared just right. i can ride tech. stuff in 1st, and still climb hills in 2nd and 3rd.........i dont think i would go smaller on the front than a 12......im sure the chain will rub the case.

i just reread your 1st post.........didnt see the 10-54 you posted untill now!
im with everyone else........this is overkill. if....and if.....you run that gear setup, you will have a top speed of about 35-40 mph, and you will have to take off in 3rd gear... 1 and 2 will be useless.

i've run 14/45 since i've had the bike.i have to do small amounts of roadwork between trails and that gearing gives me a comfortable cruising speed.first gear is still usable and i can manage tight woods with the clutch fully engaged.doesn't spin up so easy in first in snotty conditions, something we have a lot of here in wales.however, gearing was a little high for this climb.it was steeper out of shot.

Image

dan having five having looped his 310 husky.it fell to the left and that fence saved it from falling down the steep bank.

Image

had to slip the clutch a little too much on this climb and for the first time i boiled the bike a little.funny thing is i did it earlier in the year with much higher temps and no probs.rider error i guess.

a buddy runs 12-51 and I'm running 12-47, only because I haven't bothered to shave down the chainguide to make 51 fit.

The low gearing is great if you're into slow technical riding. His 12-51 is a really slow ride. but can get up anything.

I run 12 and 51, thought that was the lowest you'd ever want, I ride very gnarly, technical terrain, the engine keeps running for sure. I was worried about the chain guide but it was fine. Go for it.

What is stock gearing on the US H series bikes? 13/48?
