I took the shrouds off my bike to fix a cooling hose leak and it seems one of the brass (?) threaded "inserts" on my fuel tank is slightly buggered up. Unfortunately it doesn't look like they are serviceable.

So before I screw it up by forcing the screw in, I thought I would run a tap in there to clean up the threads. Is this the best idea or is there something else I should do? I don't want to be faced with having to replace anything.

Is there anything else to do, besides being careful, to keep these threads in good shape ... removing shrouds is pretty common for lots of different work that has to be done on the bike!

Running a tap is the only fix short of replacing the tank. In the future, always thread the bolts in by hand using a socket on a short extension (don't use the ratchet!) to start them and thread them down until you need to torque them.

I had the same issue and after taping the hole I used a little bit longer bolt to get down a little further into the threads in the brass. I think I swaped the bolt with the right side seat bolt and it had about 2 more threads on it. If you do try a longer bolt make sure it dose not bottom out and poke a hole in the tank.

Fuel tank bolts require "the touch".
