You might want to find a cave that goes up into the side of a hill so the water and snow can't run in. (Don't forget to have a fresh air vent toward the top.)

Well these suggestions are......... colorful?......
I'm getting the feeling storing a KDX isn't a popular choice amongst this group

.
I just got my bike back together as many of you probably have already seen on my wiki and posts.
http://www.phospher.com/index.php/2000_KDX_200
I rode it for two days straight,... it ran incredibly well and strong. Unfortunately, my ridding buddy looped his KTM 300 EXC at the end of the second day and shattered his left knee--a 6 month recovery at least. I'm going to attempt to find more riding buddies locally, but just in case, I need to prepare it for storage.
I've washed the bike, cleaned and lubed the chain and am thinking about draining the fuel.
Thoughts?

Drain the carb bowl.... That's about all I do.

I sure am glad it doesn't get cold down here for months at a time.
I run nothing but AV gas in all my our bikes. AV gas doesn't "go bad" as quickly as automotive gas does. It'll last a few months. Auto gas won't. I don't even drain the carbs on any of my 2 stroke motors even when they aren't going to be used for a while...... Try that with automotive gas and you'll have a heck of a mess in the float bowl. One of my racing outboard motors set for two years without being cranked one time. I hooked it up, squirted some pre-mix in the carbs and it cranked second pull.
Probably would be best to drain the float bowl though...

I've yet to have any problems with storing any of my bikes or lawn equipment with auto gas
Longest I've had the KDX sitting was 1 1/2 years.

I had to replace the carb on a lawnmower that had been sitting up for a couple of years. Outside of it looked good. Inside was a corroded up mess.

Now that's just plum un-American unless you're in the Armed Forces and deployed overseas or something like that.

Next time bring it to me and I'll keep it limbered up for you.

I just got to go thru the entire engine on mine to put in new bearings, transmission and crank. I was told that the bike sat for a few years before I bought it. All the bearings that were out of the oil had rough spots in them. That being said, if your just going to stuff it in the corner of the shed for months I would probably use some sort of fogging oil in the cylinder and over fill the transmission as full as you can get it to keep every thing wet to keep the rust demons out. Draining the carb would be advised also. Or you can just go out and ride it around the yard every week or so to keep everything moving.
