HELP ASAP - Oil Plug - Cross Maybe

Need some help in deciding how to fix my mistake.

After draining the oil, I must have either cross threaded the drain plus or there was a piece of grit caught in the threads. Either way, I am 3-4 threads deep on the bolt and they are very shiny. Used a small ratchet. I know, what a goof. I've changed the oil in this thing 20 times without incident.

I have a race this weekend and really no time to do the job right. Looking for suggestions folks. Either I can stay home and miss the race or slam it up in there and hope for the best. What do you all suggest?

Use teflon tape to wrap the threads...

If it is crossed and not going in all of the way, then buy a tap, coat it with grease to catch the chips and clean up those threads. If it is stripped then do as Inda said and hope like heck you don't loose the oil!

Thanks all....

I took your advice and used the teflon tape. :prayer: It went in pretty easy so I took it back out, cleaned up the tape and it went all the way without issue.

At this point I will order a new bolt, keep it clean and make sure I remove the bash plate, make sure she is flush and ease it in there.

No more rushing around.

Again, thanks for the tips.

Just a word to the wise in the future always start every fastener by hand not by wrench or ratchet.sounds like you may have gotten lucky and just rolled the threads and not stripped them.id run a tap as suggested through it.good luck bro

I start bolts with a socket, and/or extension all the time as sometimes you have to, but a great tip, esp when you can't see/feel that well is to put the bolt in the hole, and turn it backwards until the threads 'seat' then start it.
