Who makes that good smelling 2T oil? That distinct aroma is etched in my brain from my mispent youth hanging around MX tracks. I'm sure some of you know exactly what I'm talking about. I try to expain it to my three boys and they look at me like I'm OLD! My 13yo is riding my KDX now and my 9yo just got an RM 80. I want to start making the sweet smelling smoke. Wal-mart oil is not cutting it.

That's a Castor based oil.... they still make it under allot of different brand names.

Definately not recommended for power valves!

Golden Spectro smells sweet to me! Goes back 30 years, I'd say. It sometimes make me think of a Chapparal I had that we kept breaking.

You weren't asking for an oil recomendation, were you? Walmart oil? We don't want to go through all that........

Blendzall is probably what your talking about, although it is a castor based oil and as mentioned is bad for power valves, but it smells awesome. I have been using Klotz techniplate which is 100% synthetic in all my 2 strokes. Recomended for power valves and burns super clean. Best of all it smells great and reminds me of the good ol 1970 mx days.

I've never heard of Klotz techniplate. Where can I get some to try?

I'm in Cali and I get it from Chapparal Motorsports in San Bernardino. Go to the KLOTZ website and they might be able to help. You won't be disapointed.

You probably are remembering a castor or castor based oil.

My son runs Klotz Super Techniplate in his CR250. I run Klotz Motorcycle TechniPlate in mine. I run Klotz R50 in my hydroplanes. All of them have a distinctive smell. The "Super Techniplate" is 20% castor and smells different than the other two.

Blendzall, Maxima 927, and Klotz Benol or Techniplate will bring back that aroma you seek. I run Benol or Techniplate because my local auto-parts place carries it. Klotz Techniplate is also available in a cold weather formula designed for sled use. I have run this in a pinch, with no issues. It just pours and mixes easier.

Golden Spectro is a 100% synthetic that will not have the smell that you are looking for, but it is good stuff...
FWIW - My advice would be to find the kind of oil you like, and stick with it. Do not change brands or types from tankfull to tankfull.
There are petroleum based, synthetics, and castor based oils. If you do have to change brands on the fly, at least try to stick with the same type of stock.
Castors may settle out in cold weather, but I have never had any problems in our New England winters.

Yes, castor has that lovely smell. The down side to castor is that it doesn't mix with all fuels (low gravity race fuels, etc), and it can separate in cold temps. Klotz SuperTechniplate is 20% caster blend full synthetic that has none of the down side to full caster, but does smell nice.

I love the smell of Klotz R50, but it seems to make a lot more drool than the Silkolene I use now.

What do you all think of Yamalube?

that reduces carbon and gum formation

I have used maxima castor927 for a long while and in many bikes including multiple lt500r quadracers which are lower rpm powervalve engines and never had any valve sticking issues. When I came to this site I heard that the oil would gum up my valves so I went to maxima's website it it says there are specially prepared synthetic and a additive system that provides excellent corrosion and rust protection. Castor927 also contains a exclusive additive that keeps powervalves cleaner and working properly. With that said it is not reccomended below 35f and every oil is diffeerent and certain situations cause different results but I've had good luck and when I rebuild after the summer ill let everyone know how gummed up she is. I figure after 20 years and zero rebuilds it can't be too pretty but we will see.

Yamalube is good stuff, IMO. My older brother swears by it and has been running it for years in all of his two stokes (he currently has something like 27 bikes...).
It seems to leave a lot of heavy greasy looking spooge, but I imagine that is what makes it lube so well.
It will not have "that smell", though.
BTW - There was a Bel-Ray product that used to smell nice in the '70's, maybe MC-1? I believe that they removed the perfume element sometime in the late 80's or early 90's, though.

927 is good stuff as well. It has "that smell", but it is very different smelling than Klotz.

I used Bel-Ray MC-1 until '93, I ran Yamalube from '93 until '05, used Maxima Formula K2 from then on. I may be switching to Klotz SuperTechnoplate, now that my GF will be riding a 2t I will be using twice as much, I can get the Klotz for $39 a gallon from Rocky Mountain ATV.
Never had an oil related problem from any oils I mentioned.
