Just started my 1999 hybrid project, started with a 2001 KDX 200. Found a roller on craigslist for 200 bucks and had to jump on it. It was about time to do a full rebuild to the KDX motor anyways so thought I would attempt a hybrid. Going to have a bunch of KDX parts for sale so if anyone is interested hit me up.

I knew from the beginning that I wanted to attempt and put the KDX swing arm onto the 125 frame so I wouldnt have to replace gearing and chain being they are still in relatively good condition. Along with being a college student, reusing any parts is the main goal of the project for the time being. Through the use of the KDX swing arm I also did not have to cut the swing arm and bushings as well as not worrying about drilling the case. I reused the swing arm bolt from the KDX along with the rear shock linkage as the 125's is too long. May have to machine some spacers since the bolt is smaller and wiggles a little, but shouldnt be too bad.

I like the 200 graphics on there. Even shortened the wheelbase a little, really glad I got to keep the kickstand.

Now why doesnt everyone do this? there has got to be a reason..

your rear geometry might be little screwed up using the kdx swing arm and have a few clearance issue when you use the KDX shock...
+ the whole point of doing the hybrid is to get a more modern suspension and lighter bike.
No saying it won't work, or that it's not worth it though...

Still using Kx shock, just kdx linkage. May end up running into a problem down the road but going to try the set up with the kdx swing arm. Have the kx swing arm and linkage as well so worse case I can go back and do the standard steps.

On my 01 wheel it was a simple swap of the rear sprocket, chain was the same lenght...
Cutting swing arm and bushing is simple and easy, just a matter of taking your time and not cut too short, did the most with a cutting wheel, then "fine tuned with a flat file.
You can get the case reamed in a good machine shop (50 bux maybe)

It'll be interesting to see how that works out. The only concern would be a little screwy linkage geaometry, maybe.

I almost did the same thing with a 95 KX125 I had, but ended up going with a CR frame instead.

(I sold the KX125 with my old KDX forks mounted on it. I TOLD the buyer it would probably not be the best MX'er.)

I agree...im interested to know how this works out!..i know how it is being in college and tryin to build one with limited funds...i just graduated from a 4 year college here in South Carolina and about the same time i finished my '99 project! good luck to ya man!
