Rear shock, rebuild or replace?

I'm about 270 lbs and teh rear shock is not doing it for me. Should I go for a new spring and rebuild or replace it with an aftermarket shock? The bike is a '96 KDX200. Don't tell me to lose weight. I used to weigh 370lbs 3 years ago. I'm pretty happy with my progress.

Keep going!

You should probably rebuild the shock AND get a higher rate spring.....

If the shock is still rebuildable, you'd be way ahead money-wise to rebuild it. Like Inda said, be sure and get the right spring for your weight and riding style. Racetech has a spring rate chart that can give you a ball-park figure on what spring to use - http://old.racetech.com/evalving/menu/searchdirt.asp

There are threads on here about rebuilding the shock. It's not too hard to do and the results are definitely worth it. I filled mine with about 10-20 PSI first to make sure it would hold, then went to 120 psi and took it to a shop to get them to get the air out and charge to 147 psi of nitrogen. Some shops will whine that they can't trust it if they didn't do the rebuild. I trust shops a lot less than I trust me, so I found a shop that would fill it.
