ok so im over at this guys place buying a hay rake and i go in the barn to give him his money and i look over along the wall and thre sits a 97 kdx and im like damn its been forever since ive ridden one of thoes! he just asks me if i want it and that he will take $250 for it. lol umm yeah! he said it ran when parked a few yrs ago.
so i take it home drain all the gas clean the carb put a new plug in it and i swear it fires the first kick. it took it out for a ride and it has great throttle responce but it quickly goes flat almost like the choke is on. not sure if its in the carb or the kips not opening. looking for opinions as to where to start.

Might want to remove the mice from the reeds!
You will probably have to take a guitar string up through the jets.
Check the condition of the reeds too.... Did you put a new air cleaner on it?

Reeds, KIPS valves jammed/broken, clogged main jet....
Uh, it's early, that's all I can think of right now.
Oh, $250??? Score!!

Yer on the right track, air and fuel, the two main things a combustion engine needs to operate. I would take the entire carb apart, and soak it in gas for a few days. Do the wire thing that Inda mentioned. Gas with Ethenol in will clog ports and jets like dirt and doesnt burn as clean. Check the petcock valve also, they clog too.
And worse case senerio, it might need rings.
And if all fails, give me a call, I would be more than happy to give you yer money back.

If it's been shitting in a shed for years, it's unlikely it had ethanol in it. Just sayin...
Still need to super clean the carb. A set of guitar strings is an indispensable tool for cleaning out jets and jet passages.
Do check the kips valves as well. Perhaps they were not working when the bike was parked?

lol, thanks man! doesnt look to have been ridden much from the amount of paint still on the frame.

it seems to be getting fuel when opened up just not getting air or the lack of being able to get rid of exhaust. exhaust seems pretty gumed up so im leaning towards the kips. ill probably look into that first.

Looks like the stock pipe... replace that with a FMF Woods pipe. That will uncork it. Repack the silencer.
