Prospective KDX Buyer 200 vs 220

I'm looking at two KDX's out of state, so only seen pics so far. One is a 2002 200 and the other is a 2005 220. They are both in mint condition/low hours, so I'm assuming the 220 still has the stock piston. I'm 5'10'' and 195 lbs, so any recommendations either way? I'm 51 years old, so I don't care to go fast, just need something to ride fairly technical stuff without working too hard. If I thought my 13 year old son could handle a KDX I would consider buying both of these.

I'd lean towards the 200 personally. The 220 may suit you better though. Incredible amounts of low end power, but not as much top end as the 200. The stock 220 piston is no good, so you'd have to figure on swapping that out for a forged piston.

Like Juliend said, you might like the 220 since speed isn't your main goal. Mine is like a tractor. Another point is the 220 comes with an O-ring chain, so the guide is already wide enough. If you wanted to put one on a 200 you would need to swap the guide. Not a huge deal though, much more minor than swapping the piston on the 220. I would like to have a 200 as a loaner bike. Let us know what you get, and if that 200 is anywhere near CO, Let me know

My oldest just turned 13 last week. He's been riding for the last four years and started riding my 200 last season. He can handle my 200 easily. If your son has been on 2Ts for a while, I suspect he'd do fine on the KDX. The step from an 80 to the 200 was pretty easy for son. My vote.....buy them both.

If the guy still has them when I sell my Kawasaki Versys, I may get both and just slap a piston in the 220. My son can move up to the 200 eventually.

You can put some lowering links on the 200 for your son, and take them off in a couple of years if the seat height is an issue.
