I left the petcock open and came back to the bike after a while and there
was gas leaking out of the carb hoses. Is this normal? Besides shutting the petcock, is there a fix?

Adjust your float....

I had the same problem on my '97. I adjusted the float about a thousand times, replaced the needle and spent waaay to much time on it.
I finally bought a new carb from Sudco ($200 and some change), problem solved .
Also, make sure your petcock is in good shape. When they get old rubber pieces flake off, migrate to the carb and get stuck between the needle and seat making it impossible for the float close all the way.

That's like saying my house has a crack in the ceiling... let's buy a new house.

This very very common on KDX's....

It's a new petcock so that's probably not the issue.
