timing marks?

ive noticed upon inspecting the stator on my 03 220 there are 3 lines cast onto the inner engine case & on my stator there`s also a mark which lines up with the middle mark of the 3 .. im assuming this is the standard `factory` setting for the timing?..what do the other 2 marks either side of the factory setting represent..advance & retard??...my kdx seems to have developed a detonation symptom ive tried running super unleaded fuel 98 ron as opposed to normal unleaed 95 ron, ( UK fuel is not like what you guys in the states have) the detonation isnt that bad but its still there (my motor is standard & the bike is a canadian import & runs well)..would altering the stator 1 mark either way cure that knock??.. which way is advace & retard..clockwise or anti clockwise?? any help would be gratefully recieved..thanks.

One is advanced timing the other is retarded timing

Don't go a whole mark... a slight bump can make a huge difference.

clockwise advances the timing while counter clockwise retards the timing which will give you a little more bottom end.

Usually, one would retard the ignition a bit when you have detonation or pre-ignition.

On a 2-cycle retrarding the timing gives more rpm and over-rev while advancing the timing gives more bottom end. (It is just the opposite of a 4-cycle in regards to the effects of advancing or retarding the timing)

OK I let cyclepedia know.

Is your head/compression stock? No way it should be pinging with 98octane fuel. Look for leaks...on intake and exhaust. Can test for leaks with carb cleaner while the motor is running.

head & piston stock ,we have had unusually cold weather over here for this time of year so wasnt sure if that was part of the problem..although my friend who i ride with is experiencing similar problems on his ktm 250 exc 2 stroke..we both fill up at the same gas station so perhaps it may be a bad batch of fuel??..with check for bad air leaks in the system...can i adjust the timing without removing the fly wheel???

Bad gas is quite possible. I would only LOOK at the timing to make sure the adjustment didn't move, but not touch it at this point. It's set quite well statically, and the CDI does the rest.

Just letting you know the Cyclepedia manual has been updated on the ignition timing.

The most important thing it to keep a record of what you do, how it performs, and how you like it.

If you have questions cyclepedia has tech support.
