Top End Time!

My bike still runs great. Starts cold usually on first kick. Warm usually takes between 1 - 3 kicks

It's been losing coolant and has been having overheating issues for some time

I think I last did a top end on my KDX in Oct of 2003, so I thought I'd open her up and take a look

Image

Reeds have been in there as least as long as the Wiseco, and they were used when I bought em

Little different looking from the NOS piston I have

Image

Right exhaust valve fubar, left one not much better

Image

Other than the broken valve, I expected it to look worse

Hey, that looks familiar! Darn power valves.

You've run mostly MX2T in there that's always aged in e10 at least 6mos, right? Looks good! A good amount of crud on head/piston top, but not considering the MILES on it. Piston looks great otherwise. Sucks the valve broke as it looks way better than many that have just needed cleaning.

KIPS were really, really gummed up when I got the bike. And the left valve's gear teeth looked much the same as they do now

Then shortly after doing the topend I was riding at Prospect and the little brass screw holding the gov. rod came undone

I'm wondering if that is when it broke?

Looks like it has been broke a long time, the shaft on both pieces looks all rounded over

Yeah mostly MX2T

At the moment I'm running about 2oz each of Redline, Interceptor, Maxima, Castor927, and 8oz of Lucas

Or something like that

That be true and I hope you appreciate what you have! The fire you know.... It changed everything.

Doesn't that just bring a tear to your eye?

I agree. Not very much carbon for a 6 y/o top end. Piston looks awesome to be that old!

'..very little..' meaning past the rings.

I'd like to see a piston that's been run for seven years that has less.

Let's see the pics!!

Hell...there's more gunk on the skirt from his THUMBprint than from combustion.

I have no idea if '..funny...hilarious..' are words in agreement, disagreement, or just spurious outspew symptomatic of someone with Tourettes.

Past the rings.... that's different.... ain't it.

I have done one topend on mine when I got it and I can't say it had less since the circlip was gone on one side and the gouges kinda let some past.

When I do it in less than a month... I will take doctored photos of it for you... sound fair?

Your top end wore out?

Plating was iffy when I did it last time. Going for a replate....

I did the same thing Inda. Plating on mine was actually beyond iffy when I put the last piston in. I have a cylinder off at langcourt now. Should be back any day. Where are you sending yours??

Damn, wish I'd taken before pics of my pipe

Image

Swingarm was painted black over the original gray and most of the black was worn off

Probably gonna repaint it, but I wanted to get it smooth
