KDX in KXT tecate?

Hey,
My friend just got an 86 KXT Tecate which is complete minus engine. I suggested he do a KDX swap for the torque in trails. What KDX would be good to put in this? Is the older KDX 250 basically the KX engine of the era just modified to be more trail friendly? Or should we go with a modern 95 up KDX?
Thanks,
Rick

I've often thought that would be pretty cool. Keep in mind that the internal trans gearing is for an 18" rear wheel though!!!! It would be nice to find a running tecate motor, but that's going to be hard as I think they made about 100 of them...

The more research I have done it seems that most are being re-engined with KX250 and KX500 engines complete. So I think the 18" wheel think can be taken care of with external gearing. Maybe the KDX250 engine would be better?
