My 2006 KDX 200 is making a rattling noise and I think its piston slap.
How do I go about fixing this? Can i replace the cylinder and the piston, or am I gonna have to bore it out?

You'll have to get a look at it before deciding. If it's been maintained, you should only need to replace the piston and rings. You'll have to at least get the head off to check the condition of the plating in the cylinder though.

Does the rattling noise change when you pull the clutch?
Does it make the noise just sitting there or at a particular rpm/throttle?
KDXs rattle. If the clutch actuation changes it...that's it.
Oil quantity spec is 700ml. Put in a quart..it will quiet the racket and won't hurt anything (like some punkins that puke and quit running with too much oil in 'em).
If the plating is good...you don't bore it. It's not an iron sleeved cylinder..there are no 'oversize' pistons in the sense of 'boring it out' during the process of a top-end.
If you DO bore it..you have to replate it...well HAVE it replated. It's not something you do in your garage.

Is that a new noise?
KDXs RATTLE....more than any bike I've ever owned....and they rattle when they're healthy, too!
Does the rattle change at all?

Here's the way it goes:
There's a new guy on a forum. He asks a question..a best case of a bad example of one, even.
He gets an answer.
There is no response.
No one bothers posting any answers to his questions any more.
And that's the way it is................

canyncarvr, it rattles when its idling, and when i pull the clutch in, the tone of the rattle changes a bit. Also, it was a little low on oil, refilled it and it seems to me that was the problem. While the rattling is still there its not as bad as before.
when the rattling got worse,I assumed the worst. It sounds like you were right. I really appreciate your help and your insight.

Thanks,
Nixon

..when idling..
That's not piston slap.
What you got is the sound of a happy KDX!
Just ride it!
Cheers!

One nice thing about get'n old is.............. I can't hear a damn thing anymore. Piston slap, KIPS rattle, hell I couldn't hear the rod coming out the side of the cylinder. I probably wouldn't notice it either unless I had my read'n spec's on.
What noise, what oil, my bikes run'n fine!
