Gear Shift Fault

Hey everyone -
So I decided to do bike maintenance a little early this year. Weather was 60F, sunny and just right for some back yard bike prep. Anyway, after I greased the swing arm bearings, cleaned the chain, oiled the air filter, etc., I cranked it up to go for a spin...except the 220 wouldn't shift into 2nd.
Clutch feels good at the lever, no funky noise going into first, plenty-o-lubrication at the site glass, but no upper gears...even when riding around in first. Appendix 15-3 in service manual says gear shifting fault could be from a number of things. Bike sat out a couple of seasons two years ago...road a few times last year. Shifter returns to normal position easily after attempted shift. Shifter not hitting the case.
Any 'first thoughts' on the issue?

The bike shifted fine when you rode it last?
The shifter is hitting something
other than the case.
The number one reason for 'all of a sudden shifting problems' is 'all of a sudden new boots.'

My bike shifts great with tennis shoes. When I put my boots on I can't seem to get it above 3rd.

My stock shifter was made a little wrong. I had to run it low to get it to move enough to up shift. If I put it in a normal position it would hit the case just enough not allowing it to go into the next gear, LOOKED/felt like it was moving enough.
Move the lever down a spline or two then ride it and see if it shifts.

Hmmm I would open up the little cap screw on the cylinder and start the bike up, rev it up and see it that turns in there if it doesn't then your kips advancer lever is broken and could be in the gears.

...except for
Shifter not hitting the case.
Kind'a curious about
...but no upper gears...even when riding around in first.
As opposed to no upper gears when
NOT riding around in first?

Re: '..little cap screw..'?
What'd I miss?

it is on the side of your cylinder, it is a flat head screw driver cap. It is in front of the Kips cover.

my vote goes to the kips actuator beeing broken and the gazillion pieces stuck in the gear... I had that happen to me...
take the clutch cover off and look for metallic shavings inside and other obvious damages...

OK...which effects shifting how 'zackly?
Uh...when did the subject change to the KIPS from, '..won't shift into 2nd gear..'??

Ohhhh...you mean the broken PIN off the actuator shaft is jamming up the gear shift mechanism?
Sheesh...that didn't dawn on me 'til just now.
...that's awful. N8 said as much...I got stuck on the '..open up the little cap screw...' part.
I could'a just read what he said.
THAT would'a worked!!
Sorry, folks.
Got it.
Thanks!

Thanks for all the responses. Yep. Bike was shifting fine last summer...and same old boots.
I don't think I have a faulty "operator" - me being the operator...laugh. Didn't see any obstructions. Also, I tried upshifting by moving my entire foot up off the peg, too...as opposed to using the peg as a pivot point. That said - will look for any anything else obvious.
MXOT - I'll try dropping the lever a notch or two.
The whole "metal parts in the clutch assembly" doesn't sound good.
Since it's Saturday and the wife will be out for a few hours, I'll take the lads out for some motorcycle mechanics 101. Maybe they will teach me a thing or two!

Do what N8 said.
That will tell you in a few seconds if the KIPS has anything to do with it.
Just 'cuz it wasn't broken last time doesn't mean it can't be broken now.
What's the top-end history? The last one in knew about supporting the KIPS rod while wrenching on it and the LHT part?
