1994 USD's

Hey all. I recently grabbed an '89 200 and started wrenching on it. Decent shape, clean, all there, and dirt cheap. It didn't take long at all to get it up and running, and it runs great! I am moving toward working on suspension now.

The bike has USD's from a 94 installed, and I do not have the originals. Does anyone have any info on the stock USD's used in 93-94? I understand there was an appendex to the manual that contained service info for them. I do not have this info in my 89 service manual of course.

Are these USD's even worth keeping? Should I go back to stock, or look for KX forks? I'm 5'7" and 140lbs, doing tight trails and lots of hills/mud. Very little high speed stuff.

If anyone has any info on these things, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

J.

They are better than the stock forks that came on your 89. I'd keep them for the moment, clean them up and get the rest of the your bike in tip top shape before working on swapping them.

Those forks can be made to work quite well. They are cartridge type forks, unlike the stock 89 kdx's. With the proper springs and gold valves from race tech they'll work quite well. They just lack the complete adjustablility of the kx forks, but since they're already on the bike i'd give them a chance. If you ride the same type of terrain most of the time, set them up for that type of riding and be happy. If you go from woods to mx to desert riding then the complete adjustability of kx forks may be better for you.

Another thing about the KX forks is that you lose a bit of turning radius. That might be a factor since you say you're on tight trails. I used '03 KX forks and the turning radius is quite a bit bigger, but I didn't think to measure that before and after for comparison. I just slip the rear to compensate, but it would be nice if it turned sharper. Still glad I have them though.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I guess step one will be to locate the service info for them and order some seals. I notice them leaking just a tiny bit after a ride.

I know this is an "Aging" post but did you find the information that you were looking for? I have a 93 kdx200 with the USD forks. They have new springs and gold valves in them. I use Mobile 1 synthetic ATF for fluid which is about 7.5 weight. They work better than the 99 kx250 forks my son has on his 2005 kdx and I do have the suppliment to the manual that has the fork break down info.

I did not locate the manual pages I was after. If there's any way you could send them, that would be awesome.

Those aren't KX forks....USD's from 93-94 KDX's.

Hey, what level did you fill to with the ATF? I have not found the service info for these forks, and I'm about to change out the oil and replace the seals. I'm going to have the bike down anyway, so it's a good time to get the forks straightened out.
