Boyesen vs VF3 reeds?

I have Boyesen reeds in my modded KDX 220R.

I've read that the VF3 reeds are the ones to get. What difference would I see if (when the time comes), I replace the ol' Boysens that QuailChaser put in there with VF3 vs new Boysens?

Yeah, I know, this is me engaging in anothe coulda-shoulda-woulda like the torque pipe versus rev pipe.

Any other reeds to consider?

Nothing wrong with the 607's if you ask me. Most swear by the DF3 though...

Here is what Mr. RB says...

This carb mod works best with the air box lid removed, after market pipe and silencer, and some inexpensive Boyesen 607 reeds.

Besides the low cost of the B607s (about $36), is there any reason why Rob would go with the Boyesens over the VFIII?

I went from 607's to the VF2, 607's had really good pull but theres no comparison between them and the VF2. It pulls so much better now, it's more like when I originally went from stock to the 607's.

From what Brad and others have said the VF3 is superior to the VF2, by a good bit.

My answer would depend on to whom you are referring.


MotoTassinari's reed cages perform better than their competitor's. Cost of their product is surely a consideration for some. Their reed cages for the Banshee run about $240..and I bought two sets for two Banshees that were in my garage at the time.

Who here last spent close to $500 for reeds? And, no...it's not that money for me is no object (that's a joke!), it's that the product is worth it!

Yep..IMO and all that...if you find you do not agree, I could not care any less than I do right now.


Considering the options you need to be familiar with to intelligently purchase a VForce2 (High or low tension reeds? High or low tension reed STOPS?) and the better performance of the VF3, I don't know why anyone would consider purchasing a 2.

Maybe to save a few bucks.

Sure! If you want to waste some time...check out 1-dir (wonder) reeds. I think they use the same dyno Kay-Ds buddy with the cutting, grooving piston/cylinder head technique uses.

That is correct, it replaces the stock reed-block.

I would go with VF3's if I had 'em, but since I don't I'll go with the 2's

Rockymtn sells Boyesen products.

They sell VForce products, too.

You can purchase directly from MotoTassinari's website..but you will spend more money.

But you get a T-shirt!!

Any decent bike shop will sell them.

A BTW...

I replaced my reeds a couple of weeks back. No reason particularly, but it had been 2 1/2 years and I wanted that question out of the way in tuning my new-to-me cylinder.

There is no visible difference between what I took out and the new reeds I put in. I could feel no difference in tension in the petals. There was no problem with the cage..the reed tips hadn't dented, damaged or worn the block.

Considerably better than the Boyesen carbon fiber reeds on their RadValve.

Today I ordered a set of VF3s ($129) from http://www.monkeybuttparts.com (and some discounted Sahara riding togs -- pants and jersey for $100).

I think my reeds are about a year old. I'll let you know how it goes.

With my luck, the VF3 will increase my throttle response so much that I'll be whiskey-throttling like crazy.

Bad news when my front brake is squishy (yes, I bled it, both directions, and changed the master cylinder piston seals).
